Welcome to the Church of the Ascension Music Ministry page!
*Worshiping during a pandemic is much different from what we are all accustomed to. The following information will give you an idea of what to expect once it is safe to return to congregational singing, etc. **All rehearsal information is subject to change.
Each week we gather as a church family to celebrate the Eucharist. We come together to pray, listen to God’s word, grow in our relationship with the Lord and express our gratitude through song. Meaningful worship, worship that challenges and feeds us throughout the week and has us returning the next week wanting more, is the goal. We accomplish this through prayer, reflection on the scriptures and, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
First and foremost, ALL musicians are welcome and encouraged to share their musical talents at COA. If you desire to collaborate or join one of our groups, let me know, I will make it happen. I do my best to plan the music liturgy eight weeks in advance.
We have three groups: Adult Choir, Cantors and, RISE (children/youth choir)
Adult Choir: Meets every Thursday evening from 7-8 PM for rehearsal. The choir leads the music at Mass: we sing traditional hymns, contemporary Praise & Worship songs and, anthems. The choir has traditionally sung at the Sunday 8:30 Mass. However, just before Covid-19 hit, we began rotating between the Masses. High School students and adults of all ages are welcome to join. And, just like Jesus, I will meet you where you are, beginners to professional musicians are welcome!
Cantors: Many of our cantors are members of the choir but it is not a requirement. Cantors sing the Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation at each of the three Masses. Private rehearsals will be required if you are unable to rehearse with the choir. Cantors are welcome to help lead the hymns if they are comfortable doing so.
RISE: This is our newest and fastest-growing group! Students in 1st - 12th grade are welcome to join. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings 6-7 PM and learn the same songs in our PSR music sessions. We primarily sing Praise & Worship music and rotate between the three Masses. On special occasions, we will also join the Adult Choir for combined numbers. Young instrumentalists are also welcome and encouraged to join. The more, the merrier!
